The island’s trails range from easy, family-friendly walks to more challenging hikes, each offering a unique experience of the local flora and fauna.

North Pond State Nature Preserve Trail – 1 mile easy walking trail; features boardwalk with observation deck

This easy trail winds around a beautiful pond, offering views of diverse birdlife and wildflowers. Perfect for a leisurely stroll or birdwatching. The North Pond Boardwalk is an exciting one-mile hiking trail through the North Pond State Nature Preserve, home to one of the last remaining lake embayment ponds in the Lake Erie Islands. The entrance to the preserve is located on Ward Road, just west of the main entrance to the East Quarry Trails, and only one mile southeast of the Glacial Grooves

East Quarry Trails

Explore the remnants of the island’s historic limestone quarry, now reclaimed by nature. These trails offer a blend of history and natural beauty, with scenic overlooks and forested paths. The East Quarry Trails are a five-mile network of hiking and biking trails that wind around the abandoned limestone quarry in the interior of the island. The main entrance to the trail network is on Ward Road, just east of the entrance to the North Pond Boardwalk. Additional entrances can be found on Division Street, Woodford Road, and Monagan Road, although some of these trailheads are not well-marked.

The trails take you through woodlands, around the flooded eastern end of the quarry – known as Horseshoe Lake – and down onto the largely barren floor. The trail surface is moderately level with rocky terrain, suitable for novice and intermediate cyclists.

North Shore/Alvar Loop Trail

These unique trails traverse the rare alvar habitats on the island, featuring flat limestone bedrock and rare plants. The trails offer a glimpse into a rare and fragile ecosystem. It is home to state-endangered northern bog violet, which in Ohio only grows on the Lake Erie islands; showy orange lichen, squaw weed; other distinctive plants.

Each trail presents an opportunity to connect with nature and experience the island’s diverse landscapes, from dense woodlands and historic sites to tranquil beaches and rare ecological areas.
